CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
The national youth service corps (NYSC) is an organization set by the Nigerian government to involve the country’s graduates in the development of the country. There is no military conscription in Nigeria, but since 1973 graduates of universities and later polytechnics have been required to take part in the national youth service corps (NYSC) program for one year. This is known as national service year, corps members are posted to cities far from their city of origin. They are expected to mix with people of other tribes, social and family backgrounds, to learn the culture of the indigenes in the place they are posted to. This action is aimed to bring about unity in the country and to help youth appreciate other ethnic groups.
According to Otwin (1990) NYSC is an organization that was set up by the Nigerian government to involve the country’s graduates in the development of the country. There is no military conscription in Nigeria, but since 1973 graduates of the University and later Polytechnics have been required to take part in the NYSC programme for one year. This is known as national service year.
Historically, the NYSC was established in 1973 as a post-civil-war strategy in Nigeria, with a view to promote the development of common ties among the youths of Nigeria and the promotion of national unity (FRN 2014). Despite the fact that the NYSC was established in Nigeria’s military regime as a strategy to ensure reconstruction, rehabilitation, and reconciliation of Nigeria’s post-war economy, it remains relevant and an apex youth organization in Nigeria’s democratic era, that enforces the policies of national development through the mobilization, deployment, and development of youth capabilities (NYSC, 2012, 2014; Bodley-Bond and Cronin, 2013).
As the joint second longest standing national youth programme in sub-Saharan Africa, the relevance of the NSYC scheme cannot be overemphasized as it stands a critical platform that links educated Nigerian youths to places of employment (Bodley-Bond and Cronin, 2013). Further analysis of the NYSC practice context is provided in chapter 4, section 4.3.2.1).
There is an orientation period of approximately three weeks spent in a camp away from family and friends. After the orientation process corps members are posted to the areas of primary assignment. There is also a passing out ceremony at the end of the year. The program has also helped in creating entry-level jobs for a lot of Nigerian youths. An NYSC forum dedicated to NYSC members was recently built to bridge the gap amongst members serving across Nigeria and also serves as an avenue for corps members to share job information and career resources as well as get loans from the national directorates of employment.

1.2 Statement of the Problems
Nigerian universities and polytechnics are presently producing thousands of graduates every year and a lot of challenges sprang up yearly from the existing system caused as a result of delays and inconsistencies which might include among others: Volumes of records to be kept per each applicant in the database over certain period, poor data handling resulting into names omission, inconsistencies in NYSC overall Statistics across the nation with issues of omission and no call-up letter to Institutional graduates.
It is observed that, the NYSC is faced with the following problems due to their manual method of handling information:
- Poor handling of corps members’ information
- Time wastage in searching for information
- Data redundancy.

1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main purpose of this study was to examine the design and implementation of orientation camp information system. The specific objectives are as follows:
- To design an information system that makes data access easy for corps members.
- To design a system that can automatically post corps members to their areas of primary assignment.
- To design a system that can help the NYSC management to supervise corps members.
1.4 Justification of the Study
The good reason why this project is done is to provide an efficient method of handling corps members’ data at the orientation.
1.5 Scope of the Study
This research work covers the design and implementation of orientation camp information system using Awgu NYSC Camp as a case study.

The project is organized as follows:
Chapter one of this project reports gives the detailed introduction of the project. Chapter two gives a review of the related literature. Chapter three covers the methodology, data collection, analysis of existing system, limitation of the existing system, system design, the database design, system flowchart and the top down design.
Chapter four covers implementation, testing and integration. Chapter five gives the summary, limitations of the project, recommendation, bill of engineering measurement and evaluation (BEME) and conclusion.
