ABSTRACT

This study was conducted to find out parental motivation and students academic achievement in Agricultural science in secondary schools in Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area. To achieve this objective of the study two research questions and two hypotheses were formulated. The quasi-experimental research design was adopted for the study. A questionnaire entitled was used for data collection.  A sample size of 100 respondents was used. An independent t-test statistical method was used for data analysis.

The findings of the study revealed that academic achievement of students whose parent provide home lesson for them and students whose parents provide learning materials for them in their home performed academically better than those students whose parents do not provide learning materials for them in Agricultural science in Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area. It was therefore recommended that parents should motivate their children through adequate provision of home lesson and by provide learning materials for them, this will increase students’ interest in the learning of Agricultural science.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1   Background to the study

The training and development of a child naturally placed in the hand of the parents. This is harmonious with the common assertion of sociologists that education can be an instrument of cultural change whose foundation begins from home. It is not out of place to imagine that parental socio-economic background can have effect on the academic achievement of children in school as observed by many scholars. Anything that affects the development of environment to children will possibly affect their education or disposition to education (Dweck (2018). When a woman’s nutritional status improves so does the nutrition of her young children student academic performance measurement has received consideration attention in previous researches.

It is the challenging aspects of academic literature, and science student’s performances are affected due to social, psychological, economic, environment and personal factors. These factors strongly influence the student’s performance but vary from individual to individual and country to country previous studies on student’s academic performance had been conducted on such issues as gender difference teachers education and teaching styles, class environment, socio-economic factors and family educational background. Educational services are often not tangible and difficult to measure because they result in the form of transformation of knowledge, life skills and behavior modification of learners (Moore (2017).

According to Ryan and Deci (2010), the environment and the personal characteristics of learners play important roles in their academic success. The school personal, supports from members of the families and communities help determine the quality of academic performance and also this social assistance has crucial roles for the accomplishment of performance goals of student at school. Besides the social structure, parent’s motivation in their   children’s education increases the rate of academic success of the children. More specifically this study aims at identifying and analyzing parental factors that affect the quality f student’s academic performance.

 

1.2   Statement of the problem

The major problem that attracted the attention of the researcher to this study is the poor parental motivation of the students in Agricultural science among secondary school in Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area in recent time.

Despite that some parent in some locality are peasant farmers and there are poor. This poverty state hinder them not to give proper attention to their children’s e.g. buying of books, textbook, etc and which will enable their performance in Agricultural science to be poor. The report from the ministry of education junior secondary school (JSS3) shows that student achievement has reduced drastically.

The society blames the poor achievement of student to survival factors which include, parent’s characteristic, parents personal contribution, parents interest n the child. Based on the academic malaise of students in Agricultural science many researchers have been carried out to investigate about the poor performance of student, but much has been due as it relates to parents motivation. In order to fill this gap, the study will be conducted to find out whether parental motivation can exert influence on academic achievement of students in Agricultural science among secondary school in Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area.

 

1.3   Purpose of the study

The main purpose of this study is aimed at finding out the parental motivation on students academic achievement in the Agricultural science among secondary school students in Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area. The study specifically seeks to;

  1. to determine the influence of parents provision of learning materials on academic achievement of students in Agricultural science among secondary schools in Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area .
  2. To investigate the effect of parental provision of home lessons on academic achievement of students in Agricultural science among secondary school student in Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area.

1.4   Research Questions

  1. How does the academic achievement of student whose parent provides learning material for them and those whose parent dose not, in Agricultural science among secondary school in Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area.
  2. How does the academic achievement of student whose parent provide home lesson for them and those whose parent does not provide home lesson for in Agricultural science among secondary school in Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area.

1.5   Research Hypotheses

Ho1 There is no significant difference between students whose parents provide learning material for them at home and those, whose parent dose not, in Agricultural science among secondary school in Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area.

Ho2     There is no significant difference between students whose parent provide learning material for them and those whose parent does not provide learning materials for them in Agricultural science among secondary school in Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area.

1.6   Significant of the study

This study will bring to focus the roles of parents in the educational planning of their children parents will not be avoided from their responsibilities especially in the timely payment of fees for them and procurement of text books, uniform, and foods etc. for their children.

This study will also enable the parent to focus attention directly to their children in the house when they are back from school to help them in school and also make the parent to be aware that, they have greater role to play from high academic achievement of their children. The study will serve as a reference bank to other researches who may wish to carry out researches related to the topic.

1.7   Scope and Limitation of the study

The study is limited to Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area, due to time constraints, the researcher was not able under take the study of the entire local government area as only five (5) stratified randomly selected secondary school were selected from Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area.

 

1.8   Delimitation of the study

The area of the study is some selected secondary school in Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

1.9 Operational Definition of terms

Parental motivation –this refers to personal attitude of parent which are capable of influencing academic achievement of students.

Academic achievement- this refers to the students test and examination score or result

Motivation –it is act or the process of giving someone a reason for doing something.

Achievement – it is a thing done successful with effort, skill or courage to a person.
